The MDC T led by Thokozani Khupe has issued a stern rebuke to Residents Associations after they felt the recalls were affecting service delivery in urban centres. The party stated that it “is aware of these Residents Association leaders’ complicit participation in these scams to fleece and short change residents of their hard earned cash”.
Below is the full statement:
The MDC T party note with concern the relentless misinformation churned out by some civic organizations such as Residents Associations and political outfits including mostly the Zanu PF’s G40 faction and its associates on the recalls of Councillors.
The contribution of these groups on some recent Radio debate on recalls reflect a serious choreographed plan by these groups to misinform the public. It appears this is a deliberate plan by some civic groups and residents associations to protect corrupt councillors. There is no justification in protecting Councillors when the residents are suffering due to poor or lack of service delivery; no water, uncollected garbage, poor roads, poor sanitation etc.
The MDC-T party is aware of these Residents Association leaders’ complicit participation in these scams to fleece and short change residents of their hard earned cash. Most Alliance councillors have been allocating stands on almost every open spaces, wetlands and recreational spaces. Most of the recalled councillors were robbing the poor homeless residents by charging them land in USDs then paying councils in RTGS.
This behaviour by the affected Councillors was not only in contravention of laid down statutes but a total negation of the MDC -T values of constitutionalism and pro-poor policies. That the residents association are seen to be supporting these nefarious activities is not only unacceptable but a total contradiction of their mandate to represent and protect residents’ interests. Hiding behind the veneer of disrupting service delivery which never existed is not only hypocritical but downright dishonest of these civic groups and so called associations.
It is our considered view that those who benefit from such corrupt system are defending the rot and do not want these councillors recalled for obvious reasons.
The MDC- T has a zero tolerance on corruption and believes in the improvement of service delivery to residents and the people of Zimbabwe, so as to improve the lives of people, as enshrined in our founding values.
