The MDC-T led by Dr Thokozani Khupe yesterday took control of City of Harare Council committees after its councillors were elected chairs of the Information and Publicity, and the key Housing and Community Services and Licensing Committee.
Still bruising from the narrow defeat of its Councillor, Luckson Mukunguma by Alliance Councillor Jacob Mafume for the mayoral race, the party seem to have regrouped and set its sights on the the control of the council business. Control of the Committees will leave Mayor Mafume isolated in the making of key council decisions.
Cllr Eugenia Chipfiwa of Ward 2 is the incoming Chair of the Publicity and Publicity Committee and will be deputized by Cllr Midia Mudariki of Ward 5. The strategic Housing Committee is now being chaired Cllr Partson Mangwiro and will be deputized by Cllr Elvis Ruzani. Today the councillors will elect Chairs for Business, Finance and Development. Also up for grabs today are the chairmanships for the Education and Audit Committees.
The battle for the control of the Capital City seem far from over, with the Minister of Local Government July Moyo confirming yesterday that Mafume has been recalled by his party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP). If indeed Mafume is booted form the Town House, he will the shortest serving mayor in the history of the country.
