Hon Paurina Gwanyanya Mpariwa of the MDC Alliance was removed from all WhatsApp groups of the party, including the Standing Committee WhatsApp yesterday evening, sparking speculations that she has been fired. Hon Mpariwa, the Assembly of Women Chair, has been a member of the National Standing Committee of the MDC Alliance. She was also the Deputy Secretary General of the MDC-T in 2014.

Hon Mpariwa is a key Member of the MDC Alliance who started her political career in the MDC when she was elected as MP of Mufakose in the year 2000. Her strong trade union background blossomed into a career in politics under the guidance of the late Morgan Tsvangirai.

While she continues to represent Mufakose in current Parliament sitting, she pledged her allegiance to the MDC Alliance and recently chaired a meeting that petitioned the MDC Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora to meet with 2014 National Council members aligned to Nelson Chamisa.

Nelson Chamisa has repeatedly been accused of not being tolerate to dissent in his leadership style, and has been accused by some of his opponents to have a very low opinion of women. They cited his pledged to handover his 18-year-old sister to Zanu PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa if Mnangagwa got 5% in the 2018 election.

Another incident cited include his abrupt taking of the microphone from his wife in an episode now referred to as “Zvakwana!” greatly embarrassing her at a rally.

All efforts to get a comment from Alliance Secretary General Charlton Hwende or Hon Mpariwa have so been unsuccessful. However, sources close to Hon Mpariwa said she has been frustrated with the current direction the Alliance was taking. “She is also clear that she does not enjoy fighting amongst the MDC family. She just wanted MDC to go back to its founding values and principles of democracy, and feels the party led by Chamisa has been hijacked by external forces who do not respect the values of democracy that the MDC has always been about,” said a source close to the former Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union member.

“She then travelled to Chinhoyi due police investigations over the theft of her cattle. The culprits have since been apprehended.

“However the MDC Alliance leaders demanded that she should have attended the Standing Committee meeting rather than tracking her stolen cattle,” said the source.
